About Washington College in Chestertown, MD

History

After the conclusion of the Revolutionary War, George Washington gave the “College at Chester” a founding gift of 50 guineas (coins), agreed to serve on the board, and gave the college permission to use his name at the urging of founder Rev. William Smith. In 1782, the college officially became Washington College. Washington served on the Boards of Visitors and Governor’s for five years until he became the first President of the United States. Today, he is the college’s leading alumnus after receiving an honorary degree. As a result of his gift and passion, Washington College serves as a foundation to educate responsible citizen-leaders.
