Planning a Rock Hall MD Day trip is one of the easiest ways to experience the Eastern Shore’s waterfront charm. Rock Hall is about 20 minutes from Brampton and one of the best summer days you can have on the Eastern Shore. A real working waterman’s town on the Chesapeake Bay, it has a sandy Bay beach, a genuine harbor, great seafood restaurants, boutique shops, and the kind of unhurried pace that the Shore is supposed to have. We send guests there regularly.
We also like to make the day a little easier. Before you head out, we can have a gourmet picnic basket packed and ready for two. And when you come back, a seafood steam pot dinner can be waiting in the dining room or on the deck. The Eastern Shore, from start to finish.
Here’s how we’d spend the day. If you’re still planning the rest of your trip, our 3-night Chestertown itinerary pairs beautifully with a Rock Hall day built in.
Before You Go: The Gourmet Picnic for Two
One of the things that makes Ferry Park Beach so inviting is that it asks nothing of you. No vendors, no concession stands, no fees. Just the Bay, the gazebo, and your afternoon. The only thing to plan in advance is lunch, and we’ll take care of that.
Our Gourmet Picnic for Two is prepared fresh and packed in a basket ready to take with you. Each picnic includes sandwiches, salad, soup, fruit, bottled water, and a sweet treat. A menu of available options is provided in advance so you can choose what you’d like. Add a bottle of wine to the reservation and we’ll tuck that in too. The picnic can also be enjoyed on the Brampton grounds if you’d rather stay close to home.
If you’d like something to enjoy before heading out, consider adding a Charcuterie Platter or Cheese and Fruit Board to your room. Both are ready and waiting when you arrive, and they make a relaxed pre-adventure start to the day.
Let us know at booking and we’ll have everything ready before you head out in the morning.
Getting There
From Brampton, take Route 20 west and south directly into Rock Hall. It’s a straight shot through Kent County farm country, about 20 minutes. Parking in Rock Hall is free throughout town. If you’re looking for more ideas to fill your stay, our guide to summer things to do near Chestertown has plenty more to work with.
Morning: The Village, the Shops, and Main Street
As you drive into Rock Hall, the shopping village is the first thing you see. Park right there. The navy blue sign with the gold rockfish illustration is the landmark, and behind it a cluster of colorful cottages in purple, yellow, red, and coral surround a central gazebo. Get the Scoop ice cream is right there in the bright green cottage at the entrance. Start with a cone, walk slowly around the village, and browse the shops. Local art, ceramic mugs, coastal decor, handmade finds from area artists. No agenda required.
From there you can either walk or drive a short distance to the shops on Main Street. The Hickory Stick is a fun boutique in a yellow home with a covered porch. It’s run by an owner named Sandy who fell so in love with Rock Hall that she closed her original Westminster store to be here full time. The boatwood furniture made from retired fishing boats is worth seeing on its own. Scout bags, Brighton, handmade pottery mugs, and women’s apparel make it genuinely difficult to leave empty-handed. Fresh Start Food and Garden is worth a stop too, especially if you want to pick up picnic supplies or wander the greenhouse before heading to the beach.
Afternoon: Ferry Park Beach
From the shops, head to Ferry Park Beach. This is the centerpiece of the day. The beach sits right on the Chesapeake Bay with calm, flat water ideal for kayaking, a white octagonal gazebo tucked under shade trees, a rocky jetty, and three well-maintained porta potties on site. Free parking right there. On a summer weekday it is rarely crowded.
Bring lunch, find a spot in the sun or the shade of the gazebo, and stay as long as you want. The views stretch across the Bay on a clear day. Wide sky, calm water, and almost no one else around.
When You’re Ready: Cocktails, Dinner, or Back to Brampton
After a day at the beach and you’re starting to get hungry again, you have a few good options. For a broader look at Eastern Shore seafood restaurants, we have a full guide to that too.
If you want to stay on the water with a cocktail and watch the boats, Harbor Shack on Bayside Avenue is the move. The covered deck sits right over the marina. Maryland crab soup, cold drinks, and live music on weekends. Unpretentious and completely Rock Hall. Next door sits a wonderfully ramshackle thrift shop hand-painted in purple on weathered white wood that is worth a look while you’re there.
If you want a complete dinner, Flying Decoy Bar and Grill on Rock Hall Avenue is where we’d send you. Chef and owner Chris Golder runs a kitchen focused on locally sourced ingredients and the crab imperial stuffed rockfish is the dish people come back for specifically. Family-friendly, outdoor seating when the weather cooperates, happy hour daily 3 to 6pm.
For crabs on the water, Waterman’s Crab House at the end of Sharp Street has been a Rock Hall institution for over 40 years. The largest waterfront deck in Kent County, live bands on summer weekends, and dock slips if you arrived by boat. If your Rock Hall MD day trip falls on a weekend, you’ll catch the marinas at their liveliest and enjoy the activity while you savor the local fair.
Or simply head back to Brampton and find the steam pot waiting. After a full day on the Shore, that tends to be the easy answer.
If the Timing Is Right: The Mainstay
If your day trip falls on a Friday or Saturday evening, check whether The Mainstay has a show. It’s a nonprofit live music venue at 5753 Main Street, 125 mismatched chairs, a cash bar, and a stage that has hosted jazz, blues, bluegrass, and folk acts since 1997. It has been called the best listening room in the Mid-Atlantic. Tickets run $15 to $25 and shows sell out, so book ahead at mainstayrockhall.org before you leave Brampton in the morning.
When You Return: The Seafood Steam Pot Dinner
This is our favorite part of the day. Come back to Brampton and find an Eastern Shore seafood steam pot waiting for you in the dining room or on the deck, because there is no better way to end a day spent on the Chesapeake Bay than with more of what makes this place worth coming to.
Each Seafood Steam Pot Dinner serves two and includes fresh crab, shrimp, mussels, clams, and sausage with corn, potatoes, and onions, all steamed to perfection and served with a baguette, a seasonal dessert, and sparkling water.
Prefer something a little lighter after a full day out? Our Summer Dinners for Two are available May through September and include an entree, mixed green salad, seasonal dessert, and a bottle of wine. Options rotate seasonally. Let us know your preference when booking.
A day that starts with a picnic basket by the Bay and ends with a seafood feast on the Brampton deck is the kind of day that becomes the reason you come back.
