Maryland scenic byways offer a different way to experience the Eastern Shore — one that feels slower, quieter, and far more memorable.
Dave and I feel the journey is just as meaningful as the destination. Roads wind past farmland and water, small towns appear when you least expect them, and the pace shifts in a way that invites you to linger. Windows down. Water just beyond the trees. A road that doesn’t ask you to rush.
If you’re planning a stay with us at Brampton 1860, consider setting aside a day (or two) to explore these scenic routes. You may find they become one of the highlights of your trip.
If you’d like a broader view, the Maryland Scenic Byways Map is a helpful companion as you plan your route.
Why Scenic Byways Feel Different Here
There’s no rush on the Eastern Shore. And the roads reflect that. No highways or crowded routes. Instead, you’ll pass open farmland, quiet stretches of Chesapeake Bay shoreline, and small towns that invite you to slow down and explore.
It’s not about getting somewhere quickly; it’s about enjoying how you get there. And when you stay at Brampton 1860, that slower pace begins the moment you arrive. From here, Maryland’s most scenic byways unfold just beyond the gardens, ready to fill your days with coastal views, charming towns, and quiet discoveries.
When you’re ready to plan your escape, you can check availability and start mapping out your own Eastern Shore drive.
1. Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway
One of the most iconic scenic drives in Maryland, this route brings together everything that defines the Eastern Shore. The Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway is just a short drive from Brampton 1860, making it an easy and rewarding outing.
As you follow the road, farmland gradually gives way to water. You’ll pass marinas dotted with sailboats, working waterfronts, and small towns that invite you to slow down and explore.
Rock Hall is well worth a stop. Wander along the harbor, then make your way to the small beach locals know as Ferry Park. Tucked along Beach Road, it offers sweeping views of the Chesapeake Bay, the Bay Bridge, and the western shore. It’s a quiet spot, but one that tends to stay with you.
For lunch, Flying Decoy Bar & Grill is a favorite. Chef Chris focuses on locally sourced ingredients, and the menu changes often depending on what’s fresh. You really can’t go wrong, but if you see the duck fat truffle fries, don’t pass them up — we rarely do. Their seafood is absolutely amazing. If you like salmon, they’ll prepare it in whatever style you prefer, Eastern Shore, Mediterranean, and more.
Afterward, take a few minutes to browse The Hickory Stick. It’s one of those shops where you’ll find something unexpected—thoughtful gifts, beautiful pieces, and perhaps a little something for yourself.
If the afternoon allows, head back toward the water for a sailing excursion or a quiet walk along one of the nearby nature trails. Late in the day, the light softens over the bay, and the pace shifts in a way that feels unmistakably Eastern Shore.
It’s an easy half-day outing, though many guests find themselves turning it into something longer without meaning to.
2. Kent County Backroads Loop
Sometimes the best drives aren’t official routes at all.
On the backroads surrounding Chestertown, open farmland stretches toward the horizon. These tree-lined country roads provide quiet moments that melt away your stress.
This is where slow travel really takes shape.
If you enjoy wandering, we’d suggest heading north on MD-213 to MD-292 toward Betterton Beach. This route will have very little traffic and plenty of space to pull over and just breathe and take it all in.
There’s a sense of calm that’s hard to describe… and even harder to leave.
3. Eastern Neck Island Detour
If you’re looking for nature, this is worth the short drive.
Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge offers:
- Scenic water views
- Birdwatching opportunities (bring your binoculars)
- Peaceful walking trails
- Quiet shoreline moments
It’s especially beautiful in the early morning or late afternoon.
Comfortable shoes and a camera are always a good idea. If you enjoy birdwatching, you may want to bring binoculars. Don’t forget a water bottle to stay hydrated.
4. Chestertown to St. Michaels Drive
Another Easter Shore drive leads you south for a day trip to St. Michaels. This route combines farmland and water crossings and, of course, Eastern Shore charm.
Some stops you may enjoy along the way:
- Stop for antiques or small shops
- Pause for coffee in a quiet town
- End your day with waterfront dining
This is the drive where you’ll want to leave room for spontaneity. It’s a day that rarely goes exactly as planned — and that’s what makes it so enjoyable.
